Colorful sneakers are the perfect way to add a pop of color to any outfit. They can be paired with jeans, skirts, or even dresses. And, they are a great way to show off your personal style.
Here are some tips on how to rock colorful sneakers:
1. Choose a pair that speaks to your style.
Whether you're into sneakers with abstract art or something more classic, there's a pair of sneakers out there for you. The important thing is to choose a pair that you feel good in and that reflects your personal style.
Most of us have seen the pic's. The eccentric older woman with a cigar, a giant pink polka dot head wrap, and 14 different loud colorful patterns in her outfit. Or the guy walking a street in Europe (probably Morocco. It's always Morocco) wearing a purple suit, white hat with yellow stripes, orange sneakers, and a shiny black cane. Some of us have learned to avoid mixing patterns and wearing colorful clothing because we don't want to be the meme. But think about it. If you've seen images like that, doesn't it seem that the folks in the photo are happy? Almost always. Like, truly happy and confident. Something that seems lacking in most monochromatic fashion shots. So I say f**k the old ways of being. I like color and I like patterns. But if that's not you're gig, stick with solids. That's cool too.
2. Consider the rest of your outfit.
Your sneakers should complement the rest of your outfit, not clash with it. If you're more conservative and wearing bright printed pants, choose sneakers in a solid color that coordinates with the pants. If you're more adventurous (I like adventurous) grab the pair that is a pattern but with a scale that is different than that in the dress. If the scale of the print in the pants is large - say floral - the print in the sneakers should be smaller and have a different subject like stripes or abstracts. If you're mixing prints, try to have at least one color common in both. Never match all the colors between the two. It will make an outfit that otherwise looks quirky and fresh, into something that looks like you got it at an upholstery store in that dreary old part of town.
3. Have fun with it!
Wearing sneakers is all about having fun with your style. So don't be afraid to experiment and have some fun with your look. It's just sneakers. We're not reversing climate change here folks. Play a little.
Try mixing two separate sneakers. The left from one pair and the right from another. Make sure they are the exact same model. Don't mix a retro high-top with a jogging shoe. That's weird. Pay attention to the tips about mixing patterns in the first paragraph but other than that, get creative. Express your creative self.
